  Web hardware and software

1: Hardware

·         Web server
Web server can refer to either the hardware (the computer) or the software (the computer application) that helps to deliver web contact that can be accessed through the internet. The most common use of the web servers is to host websites, but there are other uses such as gaming, data storage, or running enterprise applications.

·         Mail server
A mail server is Often referred to as simply "mail server", an also an “e-mail server is a computer within your network that works as your virtual post office. A mail server usually consists of a storage area where e-mail is stored for local users, a set of user definable rules which determine how the mail server should react to the destination of a specific message, a database of user accounts that the mail server recognizes and will deal with locally, and communications modules which are the components that actually handle the transfer of messages to and from other mail servers and also to email clients. Generally the person or persons responsible for the maintenance of the e-mail server (editing users, monitoring system activity) are referred to as the postmaster. Most of the mail servers are designed to operate without any manual intervention during normal operation.

·         Proxy server
In computer networks, a “proxy server” is a server (a computer system or an application) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource available from a different server. The proxy server also evaluates the request as a way to simplify and control their complexity. Today, most proxies are “web proxies”, facilitating access to content on the computer.

·         Router
The Internet is one of the 20th century's greatest communications developments. It allows people around the world to send e-mail to one another in a matter of seconds, and it lets you read, among other things, the articles on HowStuffWorks.com.
We're all used to seeing the various parts of the Internet that come into our homes and offices -- the Web pages, e-mail messages and downloaded files that make the Internet a dynamic and valuable medium. But none of these parts would ever make it to your computer without a piece of the Internet that you've probably never seen. In fact, most people have never stood "face to machine" with the technology most responsible for allowing the Internet to exist at all: the router.

Software

  • Browser
A web browser is a software application it is for retrieving and presenting and traversing information resources using the World Wide Web. The information that is resources is then identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier which in short terms is called (URI) and also it may be a web page which involves images, video or other piece of content. To make it easier for users to navigate their browsers we use Hyperlink to help present it in resources which is

Uses of websites

Introductions - Organistaions create new websites for a number of loads of different reasons for example they would create a website to give out more information about their company and what all they do and what sort of things they would sell. Some organistaions such as top shop have  websites which allows the public to shop go online instead of going to the shops which is a lot easy for people who don’t have any transport to go, with online shopping they have a lot more variety of clothing and accessories. It also allows the public to email the company on views about the websites allows them to interact with the company’s or organisation’s world wide.

Inform – All websites provide some type of information about there organistaion’s. For example tourist information UK provides loads of useful information about the UK on places that are well known as tourist attraction. The tourist information UK website and leaflet help you find the most popular tourist attractions and places that you are interested in throughout Great Britain , including castles, museums, art galleries, stately homes, royal palaces, zoos, gardens, and even theme parks. Also with the tourist information UK website allows you to have many guides for tourists visiting the UK from aboard which is packed with loads of information and advice about the UK.

Sell – websites such as Amazon are used to promote and sell there products to the public when they visit this website. Amazon used to be just a website for selling books but now it sells mostly everything you want. It has a search tool bar which helps you to search for whatever you want; it is the most active a well known website used for buying products on as well as EBay. With Amazon you can buy computers, notebooks, camera’s, tools, clothes, jewelry anything you name it.

Interact There are many different types of websites that people use to interact with each other just like any social networking site such as facebook, my space, twitter. With the use of facebook you can communicate with people all over the world through chat are emails, you can chat to loads of people at the same time with facebook and can upload pictures are videos at anytime an people can like them are unlike and can write  comment underneath your picture. With facebook you can play games with yourself are play with someone to beat there score. Facebook is the most common well known social networking site in the world. With facebook you can like a comment are post new information on your page and so is twitter in a way but with twitter you can post tweets on what you are doing are what has happened are tweet a celebrity to get a reply on something are you can like a celebrity’s comment on something that they have written.

With all the websites that I looked at above are all examples of customer-facing websites. This means with the use of customer-facing, many commercial and public services websites are now designed to communicate with the customers and any other users that use the services. Most of the other websites are designed to have a more limited audience or for specifically for the people who work within the organistaions and companies.

As the internet has grown, more and more businesses have emerged that exist only on the Web, including:
  • Online banking
  • Shops
  • Travel agencies
  • Insurance companies

Travel agencies such like Easy Jet provides you with loads of information about the cheapest deals and the best accommodations for half the price. It provides a wide range of information on cheap deals and tourist attractions for when you are aboard. With the information on top of the page gives you a hand to choose what you would like to do while on holiday for example the Transport- where you would like to go, they would take you to see the best of the tourist attractions of that city or country, Accommodation Hotels – what accommodations you would like e.g. a flat, in a Hotel, Apartment or even a house. These are just a few examples of what easy jet provides on the website, here I have a few screen shots of what easy jet provides below.

Insurance companies such like gocompare.com have a wide range of information about cheap car insurance, Home insurance, travel insurance and a lot more they all provide cheap deals on insuring your property. With this website lets you basically insure anything thing you like. It lets you save your money while other insurance companies may not. It has a TV advertisement and it tells you all about the cheapest deals, and makes you want to visit the website and see what else it provides. It is very good for customers and has good information, it is also well laid out and it also isn’t filled with loads of information which would put you of from reading and looking at this website.

All of these companies or organisation sells goods and services directly to the customer.

Most customers normally pay for their products online with either a credit card or debit card and they also need to be reassured that when paying for there goods that their payments will be safe. With the use of online payments they are usually routed through a secure server, which encrypts all of the data when purchasing the product.

With the goods and products that the customer has bought online of the company’s website will have to be sent to the customer either by post or using a distribution company, and with the use of online businesses it will successfully be guarantee delivery within the next 24 or 48 hours of the purchase.

Internal Websites

Intranets
An intranet is a website which can only be accessed through an organisation with its LAN which in long terms is called (local area networking) or either by Virtual Private Networking which in short term is called (VPN) which is used for home workers. The Internet is essentially for public-access network, which that anyone can visit any site at any time as they choose.  An organisation may also want you to maintain a site for internal communications which can be accessed only by employees or members of staff. To do this they can set up an intranet e.g. like Moodle here is a screen shot of moodle. With Moodle you can access all of you assignments for when they have to be up loaded for a certain date and you can also check to see how your attendance is. The best thing about Moodle is that you can check to see what new things there are on the Moodle website e.g. like up coming events.

An intranets are protected from the outside intrusions and are all protected by security measures such as firewalls. An intranet is and organisation which creates their own network system which only allows the members of staff and the employees to access the network system and know one else. It can only be used by the users who log on to the stations on the network system. It will normally always include email services and an internal ‘website’.

Other internal uses for the intranets may be website contents which also me include:
·         Information repositories – storing electronic telephone directories, emails addresses, company news, staff handbook etc.
·         Training facilities – tutorials and information which employees can use to learn new skills as part of their continuing professional development (CPD).
An intranet can hold confidential information which should not normally appear outside the organisation or company, as well as data on the day-to-day administrative arrangements for that organisation.

Non- commercial

All of these types of websites are all created for non-profit-making reasons as they would generally keep continuing to exist through the creator’s own finance. They would probable still use the third-party advertising, with the sponsored links or donations form very generous visitors who value the resources that are provided.

Here are a few typical examples of non-commercial websites include:

·         Personal pages – about the creator, can include an on-line diary or blog.
·         Advice and guidance – ‘how to’ pages
·         Fan or review sites
·         Clubs and societies
·         Charities
·         Educational
·         Governmental (local or national)

The two examples I am going to explain more about are:
·         Charities
·         Educational

Charities

I choose to explain more about Marie Curie and how they help elderly people and people who have cancer. Their website is well laid out and has large fonts and bright colours and it stands out and attracts you attention. The Marie Curie Nurses help the elderly people when they get a certain age and they also come out to their homes and help the families of the elderly. With this website they try to get people to donate as much as they can to help raise money for this cause.

Educational

The website that I choose for Educational is the SRC website because it has all the information on it about all the other SRC Campuses in further Education. It gives details of their address, number and details about all the Campuses and courses that are all involved in the SRC website and it provides all the details of courses available.
